Making Fast Money

Two days after celebrity publicist Ronni Chasen was gunned down in Beverly Hills, a source reveals that her killing may have been planned. Christine Pelisek on Chasen's last hours.

The Beverly Hills Police Department is dedicating almost half its team of detectives to investigate the shooting death of veteran celebrity publicist Ronni Chasen, who was gunned down on a quiet tree-lined street in Beverly Hills early Tuesday morning. According to sources close to the investigation, eight of the city’s 19 detectives are working on the bizarre case.

Chasen was fatally shot as she was driving home to Westwood from an afterparty for the premiere of the Cher movie Burlesque at the W Hotel in Hollywood. She attended the party with her songwriter client Diane Warren and hobnobbed with her usual pals, celebrities and agents.

Friends said Chasen left the party shortly after midnight. She traveled down Sunset Boulevard before making a left on North Whittier Drive, a quiet street with million-dollar mansions. A few minutes later, shots rang out into the night. Chasen was found slumped over the steering wheel of her Mercedes coupe, suffering from gunshot wounds. Her car had collided with a light post. Her passenger side window was shattered. Paramedics took her to Cedars Sinai Hospital, where she died of her injuries about an hour later.

Two days later, Chasen’s death is still a mystery. Detectives have no motive or clue why anyone would want to kill Chasen, who worked in Hollywood for more than 40 years. “No one would be angry with Ronni,” said Caroline Graham, Chasen’s longtime friend. “Her clients adored her.”

But police are keeping their options open. Questions remain. Was the 64-year-old agent killed in an act of road rage? Was she followed from the W Hotel? Was she targeted, as some bloggers have suggested? Was she robbed?

“We haven’t ruled out anything,” said Beverly Hills Police Department Sgt. Lincoln Hoshino. “It is a wide-open investigation. We just don’t know. It is a big whodunit.”

“We have no suspect or no leads in this case at this point,” he said. “We don’t know if the window was shot out or broken as a result of the accident.”

“It is a wide-open investigation. We just don’t know. It is a big whodunit,” said Beverly Hills Police Department Sgt. Lincoln Hoshino.

Chasen, a fast-talking New Yorker with a quick wit, represented a number of A-list stars and filmmakers, including the late Natalie Wood and Jaws producer Richard Zanuck. She began her career in 1973, worked at Rogers & Cowan, and ran publicity at MGM before she formed her own company, Chasen & Co. Over the years, she worked on the marketing campaigns for Lolita, the Oscar-winning Driving Miss Daisy, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Hoshino said detectives now believe that Chasen—who called her assistant and left a message about six minutes before the shooting—was hit before her car collided with the light post. However, detectives are hampered by a lack of eyewitnesses. “There are no witnesses that we are aware of,” he said.

• Ronni Chasen’s Stricken Colleagues Speak Out

• Caroline Graham: Ronni Chasen, Hollywood Wonder Woman
But there is a lot of speculation. “Whittier Drive is a pass-through street,” said Beverly Hills attorney Gina Hope, who lives nearby. “This is one of the safest streets. I don’t think it was road rage. This street is dead after 6. There is nobody around late at night. It seems to me it is pretty much, ‘I want you dead.’”

In a bid to help out the police department, friends and colleagues of Chasen are banding together. On Wednesday, the Palm Springs International Award Gala and Film Festival offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Chasen’s death.

Detectives were seen Wednesday canvassing the Whittier Drive neighborhood seeking video surveillance footage from residents, while others were looking for clues at the W Hotel and at Chasen’s high-rise condominium on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, about a five-minute drive from where she was shot.

Yes folks, that sadly did happen

The image you see accompanying this article sparked a powder keg at about 4 a.m. Irish time Tuesday morning.

For those living under a rock the last few days, Miz cashed in his Money in the Bank opportunity on Randy Orton and won.

Thus begun civil war all over the Internet between Miz fans and those who dislike him.

In the case of the Miz, though, the word "fan" doesn't seem to apply. The fanbase seems entirely split between those who blindly defend Miz and ignore his shortcomings and those who despise his very existence within WWE.

Since he won the WWE title, the two factions have begun a war of words with each other on news sites and forums across the web.

However, this article will scrutinise the self-destructive logic of a Miz mark.

In the last four days, the Miz has been compared to The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Randy Orton and now, astonishingly, "Nature Boy" Ric freakin' Flair.

Now look, I know Miz has improved, but any wrestling fan who in their right mind compares Miz to the above names needs their head examined. Miz's ring skills are far inferior to Cena and Orton's, as is his ability to carry a match. To put his subpar mic skills alongside the genii of Austin, Rock and Flair is madness.

Miz fans talk about Miz as if he is Rocky Balboa—a guy who fought his way up to the top with constant struggle. Miz walked into OVW after appearing on The Real World and for some reason got the call-up one year later. Fast-forward four years (you may as well), and this reality show reject is WWE champion?!?!

That's no Rocky story. That is a silver-spoon story.

They also talk about his build-up. Let's examine previous Money in the Bank winners' run-up to cashing in:

Edge: Had great rivalries with Matt Hardy and Ric Flair, the latter of which solidified the Rated R superstar as a Main Event player.

Rob Van Dam: Series with Shelton Benjamin, rivalry with Cena headed into ONS.

Mr. Kennedy/Edge: Kennedy had named a date and was getting more and more heat, week by week. By this point, Edge had become an opportunist and pounced on both Kennedy and a beaten Taker.

CM Punk: His first cash-in had no build-up, and his reign was a flop. His second was built up through a feud with Umaga and created the super-heel Punk. Punk also beat Chris Jericho and Edge among others in the run-up to his second cash-in.

Jack Swagger: No build-up, flop reign.

Kane: 12 YEARS of build-up to a title reign, which has been magnificent.

Miz: No build-up. Follow the pattern.

Miz has had no rivalry with a top star. He has to compete in multi-man matches to hide his weaknesses.

It amazes me that some people have the levels of stupidity to say Miz is the best WWE has. Miz is far from that; Miz is not even the top heel on RAW, in practice. That would be the man who has done everything Miz hasn't: Wade Barrett.

Vince McMahon is reportedly a fan of Miz. I don't normally have to criticise Vince for making a TNA-like decision. But that is exactly what making Miz champion was.

Even a blind mark can see that.

Guys, I just have to request something. I'm not interested in the comment section turning into a flame war. So constructive comments only. Thanks.

Making Money Cash

In the upper reaches of Wall Street, talk of another financial crisis is dismissed as alarmism. Last fall, John Mack, to his credit, was one of the first Wall Street C.E.O.s to say publicly that his industry needed stricter regulation. Now that Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, the last two remaining big independent Wall Street firms, have converted to bank holding companies, a legal switch that placed them under the regulatory authority of the Federal Reserve, Mack insists that proper supervision is in place. Fed regulators “have more expertise, and they challenge us,” Mack told me. Since the middle of 2007, Morgan Stanley has raised about twenty billion dollars in new capital and cut in half its leverage ratio—the total value of its assets divided by its capital. In addition, it now holds much more of its assets in forms that can be readily converted to cash. Other firms, including Goldman Sachs, have taken similar measures. “It’s a much safer system now,” Mack insisted. “There’s no question.”

That’s true. But the history of Wall Street is a series of booms and busts. After each blowup, the firms that survive temporarily shy away from risky ventures and cut back on leverage. Over time, the markets recover their losses, memories fade, spirits revive, and the action starts up again, until, eventually, it goes too far. The mere fact that Wall Street poses less of an immediate threat to the rest of us doesn’t mean it has permanently mended its ways.

Perhaps the most shocking thing about recent events was not how rapidly the big Wall Street firms got into trouble but how quickly they returned to profitability and lavished big rewards on themselves. Last year, Goldman Sachs paid more than sixteen billion dollars in compensation, and Morgan Stanley paid out more than fourteen billion dollars. Neither came up with any spectacular new investments or produced anything of tangible value, which leads to the question: When it comes to pay, is there something unique about the financial industry?

Thomas Philippon, an economist at N.Y.U.’s Stern School of Business, thinks there is. After studying the large pay differential between financial-sector employees and people in other industries with similar levels of education and experience, he and a colleague, Ariell Reshef of the University of Virginia, concluded that some of it could be explained by growing demand for financial services from technology companies and baby boomers. But Philippon and Reshef determined that up to half of the pay premium was due to something much simpler: people in the financial sector are overpaid. “In most industries, when people are paid too much their firms go bankrupt, and they are no longer paid too much,” he told me. “The exception is when people are paid too much and their firms don’t go broke. That is the finance industry.”

On Wall Street dealing desks, profits and losses are evaluated every afternoon when trading ends, and the firms’ positions are “marked to market”—valued on the basis of the closing prices. A trader can borrow money and place a leveraged bet on a certain market. As long as the market goes up, he will appear to be making a steady profit. But if the market eventually turns against him his capital may be wiped out. “You can create a trading strategy that overnight makes lots of money, and it can take months or years to find out whether it is real money or luck or excessive risk-taking,” Philippon explained. “Sometimes, even then it is hard.” Since traders (and their managers) get evaluated on a quarterly basis, they can be paid handsomely for placing bets that ultimately bankrupt their companies. “In most industries, a good idea is rewarded because the company generates profits and real cash flows,” Philippon said. “In finance, it is often just a trading gain. The closer you get to financial markets the easier it is to book funny profits.”

It all started two years ago when my husband and I were being badgered at every store with the "I want"s from our then four-year-old daughter.  We began issuing four dollars spending money every two weeks that she could use to spend on toys or games or gifts.

On her fifth birthday this fall, we upped the allowance to five dollars every two weeks.  Then, a bit of news about low personal savings rate in our country hit my news stream and I knew we had to do more than just give our daughter money to spend.

The US personal savings rate of disposable income is currently 5.5%.  The percentage savings in 2009 and 2010 are higher than anytime previous in the century, most likely due to uneasiness from the US economic slump.  Even the most risk-taking financial advisors suggest aiming to save 10%, something many Americans are not achieving at this time or anytime in the past decade.

To instill the habit of saving, we collected and renamed three piggy banks 'spend', 'save', and 'share'.  My daughter is now feeding a minimum of one dollar each to the save and share pigs with her bi-weekly spending money.

Five is a great age to introduce the concept of saving and giving to charity because five year olds are generally enthusiastic about new plans, especially those involving the whole family.  Five year olds still get a thrill out of feeding the piggy bank.  They love to support charitable causes they enjoy like parks and museums.

Five year old children do not understand the concept of saving at a bank or giving cash money, however.  Our daughter cried at the bank when we set up a savings account, saying the bank was "taking her money". We decided to wait on making regular savings deposits and keep bills in a safe spot at home.

Our plan is to help our daughter spend her charity money on something tangible to give away.  Giving actual goods to an organization is more specific and memorable than a check or cash donation.

There is still much to teach a young child, including interest, loans, good spending habits, and how to choose a good charity.  They all must be taught with intention, as the financial world is complicated even for adults.  The spend/save/share concept is a great start for our family, and perhaps yours too.

Corruption in the government of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been a head for U.S. policy makers for years, now it appears to extend to receipt of bribes from the Islamic Republic of Iran:

One evening last August, as President Hamid Karzai wrapped up an official visit to Iran, his personal plane sat on the airport tarmac, waiting for a late-running passenger: Iran’s ambassador to Afghanistan.

The ambassador, Feda Hussein Maliki, finally appeared, taking a seat next to Umar Daudzai, Mr. Karzai’s chief of staff and his most trusted confidant. According to an Afghan official on the plane, Mr. Maliki handed Mr. Daudzai a large plastic bag bulging with packets of euro bills. A second Afghan official confirmed that Mr. Daudzai carried home a large bag of cash.

“This is the Iranian money,” said an Afghan official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Many of us noticed this.”

The bag of money is part of a secret, steady stream of Iranian cash intended to buy the loyalty of Mr. Daudzai and promote Iran’s interests in the presidential palace, according to Afghan and Western officials here. Iran uses its influence to help drive a wedge between the Afghans and their American and NATO benefactors, they say.

The payments, which officials say total millions of dollars, form an off-the-books fund that Mr. Daudzai and Mr. Karzai have used to pay Afghan lawmakers, tribal elders and even Taliban commanders to secure their loyalty, the officials said.

“It’s basically a presidential slush fund,” a Western official in Kabul said of the Iranian-supplied money. “Daudzai’s mission is to advance Iranian interests.

And the influence that the Iranians are purchasing could have lethal effects for Afghan opponents of the Karzai government and U.S. troops:

The payments to Mr. Daudzai illustrate the degree to which the Iranian government has penetrated Mr. Karzai’s inner circle despite his presumed alliance with the United States and the other NATO countries, which have sustained him with military forces and billions of dollars since the Taliban’s ouster since 2001.

Earlier this year, Mr. Karzai invited the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to the presidential palace, where Mr. Ahmadinejad gave a virulently anti-American speech. When Mr. Ahmadinejad visited Kabul, he brought two boxes of cash, an Afghan official said. “One box was for Daudzai personally, the other for the palace,” the official said.

A senior NATO officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to discuss whether Mr. Daudzai was receiving money from Iran. But he said that the Iranian government was conducting an aggressive campaign inside Afghanistan to undermine the American and NATO mission and to gain influence in politics.

The NATO officer said Iran’s intelligence agencies were playing both sides of the conflict, providing financing, weapons and training to the Taliban. Iranian agents also financed the campaigns of several Afghans who ran in last month’s parliamentary election, the NATO officer said.

The Iranian intelligence services have developed the ability to assassinate opponents and attack American troops inside the country, the NATO officer said.

“I am very concerned that they have a lethal capability and presence inside Afghanistan and Kabul,” the officer said.

Obama administration officials have expressed alarm about Iranian intentions. Last week, Richard C. Holbrooke, the administration’s special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, complained to Afghanistan’s finance minister, Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal, about Mr. Daudzai and Iran’s influence in the presidential palace, a former Afghan official said.

Mr. Holbrooke did not respond to requests for comment. In an interview, Mr. Zakhilwal declined to talk about the discussion with Mr. Holbrooke or about any Iranian activities in Afghanistan.

“We have no choice but to be friendly with Iran,” Mr. Zakhilwal said. “It’s a hostile neighborhood.”

On some level, Karzai’s decision to cozy up to Iran makes sense. After all, he knows that the United States is isn’t going to be in Afghanistan forever, and even that his own record of electoral and personal corruption will at some point cause the U.S. to realize that defending an inherently corrupt regime that makes a farce out of the democratic process just isn’t worth it. For a nation with borders that touches some of the most powerful nations in Western Asia, it’s not surprising that he’d cozy up to Iran as a way of protecting his own power, which is ultimately all that Hamid Karzai appears to care about.

The question for the U.S., though, is how long we’re going to maintain the charade that Hamid Karzai is an honest partner, or in any sense an ally of convenience only. We’ve adopted a war strategy that depends on winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people, and at the same time we’re backing a leader that his corrupt and has turned their elections into a fraud. In a society where tribal loyalties are still stronger than any sense of nationalism, that seems like a combination that’s doomed to failure in the end.

Ways of Making Money

Despite the positive-sounding headline, the NYT article was actually negative in tone, starting off with a joke about how an Android developer making $1-$2 per day on his app was laughed at by his peers, while insisting "that's pretty good money!"

The blows against Android then continue with a quote from Matt Hall, co-founder of Larva Labs, who talked about the problems with Google Checkout. Then Rovio's (maker of Angry Birds) Peter Vesterbacka complained about the challenges of developing for such a fragmented environment. And then it was Hall again, with a quote that's already getting repeated on Apple-watching blogs like John Gruber’s Daring Fireball:

"Google is not associated with things you pay for, and Android is an extension of that," said Mr. Hall of Larva Labs. "You don't pay for Google apps, so it bleeds into the expectations for the third-party apps, too."

There Are Ways to Get Paid

If you want to debate the merit of the above statements, feel free to head to the comments section, but we feel the need to point out the obvious miss from the NYT article: there are alternative revenue streams for developers besides direct app sales. (After all, even Google's "free" services aren't actually free - they're monetized through advertising.)

We recently highlighted some findings related to this matter earlier this month. For example, research from mobile ad company Millennial Media found that Android ad revenue has, for the first time ever, beaten iPhone ad revenue on the company's ad network.

At the time, we wondered why, given the lower ad impression numbers (as compared with iPhone/iOS). As it turns out, Millennial's Michael Avon had some thoughts on the matter. Besides the fact that there is simply less ad inventory amid soaring demand on Android, he also shared that Android is currently a "hot" platform for advertisers as it allows them to reach first-time smartphone buyers and a more diverse set of consumers.

"We believe some advertisers are paying a premium to reach those users early in their smartphone experience," he said. "Our advertisers have also shared that Android allows them to reach a diverse set of consumers across all major carriers, making the platform highly desirable and increasing demand for the platform...With more advertiser demand per each available impression on Android, it resulted in more revenue per impression."

The NYT article also makes brief mention of the lack of an in-app purchases model for Android, another disappointment for developers, especially since we recently learned that in-app purchases generate more revenue than ads, in some app categories.

However, as we also noted last week, developers don't have to wait on Google to implement an official in-app purchase mechanism, because there are several third-party solutions already available, including Boku and Zong for virtual goods and PayPal's in-app purchases technology for physical goods.

NYT had one good thing to say about Android development: because of the store sizes (100K vs 300K apps/Android vs iPhone) it's easier to get noticed in the Android Market today than it is in the iTunes App Store. Well, at least there's that.

Online video is well and truly, having the best time of its life right now. It seems to be factoring in every marketing plan worth its salt, with some incredible videos being produced by brands that are lighting up social media. I wanted to explore the state of the online video industry a bit further and delve into the stats that show the huge growth curve online video is currently on. Right now it is one of the most fascinating aspects of online, as brands continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible and engaging the audience in completely new ways. It is a seriously big business and one that every brand wants to be a part of. And it’s easy to see why..

Over 35 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute

This stat on its own is pretty stunning and quite hard to get your head around. But when you look at in in the context of the past 3 years, or even 6 months, you realise just how impressive this is. The graph below from Youtube shows the average hours of video uploaded every minute, back to June 2007. While this started at 6 hours, in the past 6 months it stood at 23. That’s a huge increase of 12 hours per minute in just 6 months :

That is some seriously impressive growth and also shows that just as much as brand video is growing, ugc is growing at a staggering rate, due largely to the growth in mobile and ease of uploading. As Youtube note themselves there are other factors, such as upping the time limit in videos, which would obviously attribute for an increase in the total length of video uploads. But this is impressive nonetheless.

Blinkx shares up by 400%

At the business end of video, Blinkx are showing that online video is starting to become a profitable industry. While Google still won’t reveal whether Youtube is making them money or not, Blinkx have recently announced their first ever turn in profit in the 6 months up to September. And it comes 3 years after they first launched. Blinkx make money through running ads alongside the videos they index, acting as a huge video search tool. They have certainly had a good year, as the 400% share increase shows. It’s also encouraging to see that online video isn’t just about Youtube and there are some other serious players in the market with unique offerings.

Online video ads reach half of U.S. users

While some research shows that advertisers are cautious over online video advertising, due to factors such as standardisation of ad formats, online video advertising is going from strength to strength. A recent study from ComScore (the people who measure things), found that just over 45.4% of users in America viewed at least one video ad over a month. But more impressively, were exposed to 32.2 videos each, on average. That’s over 4.3 million video ads that were served to the online U.S. population in September 2010. This shows the power of online video ads to get right in front of your target audience. And while there are some definite rights and wrongs in the content of the video ad, I think we’ll see this grow even more and prove itself as a valuable industry up there with TV.

Comedian makes $315,000 from online video

A recent study found that comedians top the bill for online video earnings, and one in particular is doing very well. A recent study found that comedian Shane Dawson, who amassed 431.7 million online video views in the past year made $315,000 from his content, through ad revenue. He came out top for independent earners on Youtube and it’s certainly an aspirational case study that shows the business of online video isn’t just for big brands.

Kia spend a third of budget on online video

In a bold move, Kia Motors have invested a third of their £2 million marketing budget for the new Sportage model, into online video. We’ve seen the motor industry embracing social media more and more – with Ford launching a model through Facebook – and this shows the commitment that some brands are making to online video. Not so much an add-on or a nice to have, but a central facet of a multi-million pound campaign. The online campaign will focus on the central characters from the TV adverts and include home-page takeovers and video ads. Cases like this help to solidify online video as a serious marketing avenue that can bring a campaign to life and help you get that extra bang for your buck.

20% of downstream internet traffic is to Netflix

In a huge coup for Netflix, a recent study found that 20% of peak time donwstream internet traffic was streaming video from their site. This is great news for Netflix, and perhaps not so great news for the DVD market. If Netflix were available in Ireland I would be there in an instant and would choose to view all films in this way, as it simply doesn’t make sense to invest in a DVD anymore and I expect that even the gift market for this may eventually die out. 20% is a huge figure and shows how much Netflix has staked its claim in this market.

2 billion videos viewed each month Facebook

In June 2010 Facebook released some interesting stats into their online video offering, which show the huge potential it has to own this market. They revealed that as well as 2 billion video views on its site each month, there were 415,000 online video uploads each day. While it may not be a contender to Youtube just yet, the sharing capabilities within Facebook and the ease of connecting with your community show the potential for this to grow. Interestingly, Youtube now offer the option of connecting with Facebook instead of logging in with your gmail account. This shows Youtube recognises the power to use the huge community on Facebook, something it can’t compete with, to combine with its own wealth of online video.

Live stream video viewing up by 650%

In their most recent report into online video, Comscore announced that the amount of live-streamed video we’re watching has grown by 648% over the past year. This is absolutely phenomenal growth and compares to a (still impressive)  68% increase in video views on Youtube. While it may still form a minor part of the online video  market, live streaming is growing in popularity and use, as we become more accustomed to this form of content, both as consumers and producers. UStream are owning the market here, but Facebook are quickly getting in on the game – recently introducing LiveStream integration with Facebook pages. This has the potential to hugely increase the live stream video market and see it really reach the mainstream.
